Have you been phished lately?

April 29th, 2008 by Randy Davidson

You are a hip 21st century kind of person right? You conduct a lot of business online: check your bank account, monitor your credit cards, and browse eBay every chance you get. These days in order to do any of the above you must have an e-mail address. I am a firm believer that e-mail is a good thing, seriously in need of a makeover but still a useful concept. One thing is certain; if you have an e-mail address you will get spam. Loosely defined spam is unsolicited bulk e-mail or junk e-mail. Some of these messages will undoubtedly request that you take some action to confirm your identity. With that e-mail you have been introduced to the world of “phishing” (pronounced fishing).

Returned Email? What?

April 28th, 2008 by Randy Davidson

So you received a strange e-mail “returned” to you because of this reason or that. The problem is you never sent the alleged e-mail to begin with. What is going on here?

First things first… take a deep breath and don’t panic. You haven’t done anything wrong. There’s no need to call your tech support folks and vent. This is a common problem on the internet, more specifically, e-mail systems.

E-mail systems are not very intelligent. At their core, e-mail handling has not changed much in the past 25 years. Messages are transferred from one system to another in plain text without means of verifying sender information. In this respect e-mail is much like traditional, or snail, mail through the US Postal Service. I can postmark a letter to your home address and put false information in the return address section. The post office would never know it did not originate from who I said it did. Once the letter is received and marked “return to sender” it would not come back to me, it would instead be returned to the incorrect address written on the envelope. Fooling an e-mail system is just about that easy. Essentially, you can be whoever you want to be when you send an e-mail message (if you know what you are doing) by changing the return address. This is called e-mail spoofing.

January 7th, 2008 by Randy Davidson

Have you ever hit an uber-informative website only to find that you need to register before you can read the content? More than likely this source of all knowledge is going to require you to enter the one sacred piece of information that must be guarded above all things… okay not really. Your email address is not that secret, but in order to prevent yourself from getting spammed off the internet you should really be careful what “master list” your address gets added to. For many sites in this category you are required to provide a valid email address that the website will use to send confirmation information about your registration. Once that email is received you have access to the site.

Social Bookmarking

December 19th, 2007 by Randy Davidson

What is Social Bookmarking?
Social Bookmarking is a term used to describe a service which allows you to store your internet favorites (aka bookmarks) to a website instead of your local computer.  This allows you to access a master list of those sites from any internet connected computer.  Essentially, you have the ability to take your bookmarks with you.  In addition, you have the ability to share your favorites with others.  You as the teacher could create a mesh of student websites for reference, amusement, collaboration, etc.  Some sites can be marked as private, making them accessible only to you.
